2 Performance
========================================================================

2.1 AGP
-------------------------------

AGP support is required to enable Enter The Matrix to transfer texture and other video information rapidly to your graphics card.

Many Windows 2000 configurations have problems with AGP configuration, resulting in severe performance degradation.

If you experience problems with AGP support, please refer to Microsoft Technical Support, or contact customer service representatives at the company where you purchased your computer.

2.2 Resolution and Rendering
-------------------------------

The resolution in which you run the game will have the greatest impact on performance. Top-of-the-line graphics cards should have little trouble providing high performance at high resolutions, while a 640x480 resolution will provide the best performance on older hardware.

In some scenes featuring wide-open areas, more graphical power is required to achieve high performance. Users with older graphics cards may find that lowering the Far Clip Bias settings, found in the game’s option menu, to 50 or even 25 may also improve the game’s overall performance.

2.3 CPU Speed
-------------------------------

Like most PC games, Enter The Matrix is sensitive to CPU speed, memory bandwidth, and cache performance, and runs smoother on newer, faster processors from AMD and Intel. See section 1.2 for a guideline on recommended specs.

Users with older CPUs may find that lowering the Particle Density settings, found in the game’s options menu, to 50, 25 or 10 may improve the game’s overall performance.

2.4 Memory
-------------------------------

Enter The Matrix's performance is also dependent on the amount of the computer’s RAM and the amount of memory that is available. Machines with less memory will access their hard disk more frequently to load and swap data, which can cause sporadic pauses in gameplay. If your computer has less than 256 MB of RAM, to ensure the best performance, make sure to turn off other applications while playing Enter The Matrix.

The following are some general notes on the game’s performance under different memory environments. Actual results may vary.

 * 256 MB of RAM: Minimal swapping with default auto-config settings.

 * 384 MB of RAM: Might swap in cases with highest texture detail.

 * 512 MB of RAM: No swapping expected.

2.5 Considering a system upgrade?
-------------------------------

If you are considering an upgrade to your system, here are some general tips based on our experience running the game under a variety of conditions:

 1) Add more RAM. It’s affordable, and easy to upgrade. With more RAM, you’ll experience less hard drive access and smoother audio performance.

 2) Upgrade your CPU. Faster processors provide better performance for virtually all applications.

 3) Upgrade your hard drive. A hard drive running at 7200 rpm or better, with an 8 MB cache or better, is recommended.

2.6 Getting better performance
-------------------------------

By default, Enter the Matrix picks hardware-specific default values the first time you run the game, resulting in generally good performance. Users can experiment with the game’s settings and personal preferences via the game’s options menu.

Screen resolution has the greatest impact on older graphics cards, so first try setting the screen size to 800x600 or 640x480.

If you have a fast graphics card, but a slower CPU, users may try to lower the Far Clip Bias settings, found in the game’s options menu.

========================================================================
3 Troubleshooting
========================================================================

3.1 Sound issues
-------------------------------

The audio in the FMV (Full Motion Video), Cineractives (in-game graphic movies) and especially in-game effects takes full advantage of 3D-capable sound cards.  If you have upgraded your sound card since first installing the game, please check the options menu and make sure to turn on your new capabilities.

3.2 Display Issues
-------------------------------

Monitor Settings:
Screen Refresh Rate(Windows XP)/ Refresh Frequency(Windows 2000):  Refresh rate can not be higher than 85 Hz

3.3 Control issues
-------------------------------

Most PC keyboards can't recognize certain combinations of three or more simultaneously pressed keys.

3.4 Direct3D
-------------------------------

For best performance, please make sure you are running the latest drivers for your graphics card. To obtain the latest drivers, please visit the web site of your graphics card manufacturer.

3.5 NVIDIA 43.xx drivers
-------------------------------

The NVIDIA 43.xx drivers are known to have visual flaws and performance problems (hitching) with Enter The Matrix. These flaws are not present in the latest drivers.

If you are currently running the 40.xx drivers, please upgrade to the 43.45 (or later) drivers available at NVIDIA’s website:

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

The 43.45 drivers have been tested with Enter The Matrix and confirmed to be fully compatible.

3.6 Radeon 8x00 issues
-------------------------------

Radeon 8x00 cards exhibit minor visual flaws. We recommend downloading the latest available drivers from ATI's website:

http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html

3.7 Radeon 7x00 issues
----------------------

Radeon 7x00 cards exhibit visual flaws with the latest Catalyst 3.2 drivers
XP v.6307 and 9x v.9088.  Although this card is not supported, we recommend downloading the previous drivers for XP, 6.13.3276, and for 9x 4.13.7189 from ATI's website:

http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html

3.8 DELL8250 series systems and ATi Radeon 9700 TX w/TV
-------------------------------------------------------

DELL8250 series systems exhibit dark levels with the older drivers.

If you are currently running the older drivers, please upgrade to the
v.7.83.030120a1-007730C-Dell, A01 (or later) drivers available at DELL's website:

http://support.dell.com/

The v.7.83.030120a1-007730C-Dell, A01 drivers have been tested with Enter The Matrix and confirmed to be fully compatible.

========================================================================
4 Controls
========================================================================

4.1 Keyboard
-------------------------------

You can bind new keys to controls by clicking on the "Controls" button in the game’s options menu.

4.2 Mouse
-------------------------------

Although you can rely solely on your keyboard to move around and interact with Enter The Matrix's 3D universe, using both the keyboard and mouse simultaneously gives you much more fluid and responsive control.

When you use the mouse to control your rotational movement and aiming, you gain a degree of precision and speed that players using keyboard-only controls can't touch. The keyboard is best used for simple lateral and forward/backward movement, and for jumping.
