Description: 3DSOM Pro 2.1.0.2
3D SOFTWARE OBJECT MODELLER PROFESSIONAL
-The professional image-based 3D modelling solution-
3D Software Object Modeller, or 3DSOM Pro, is a cost effective system for modelling real world objects. 3DSOM Pro
technology allows a 3D model of an object to be created quickly and cheaply while requiring far less technical
skill or expensive hardware than competing systems. 3DSOM Pro creates models that can be used in a variety of
applications ranging from e-commerce to 3D computer games.
To use the system, an object is placed on a specially designed calibration mat. A digital camera fixed to a
tripod should preferably be used to take pictures of the object on the mat. The object and mat are turned together
by hand and a number of pictures are taken. The images are then processed to generate a 3D textured model
automatically within a few minutes. The model can then be displayed in a conventional web browser for rotating,
zooming etc., or imported into a 3D editing package for further manipulation.
Version 2.1 of 3DSOM Pro is a major new release with numerous bug fixes and improvements. You can now import and
export data in several new formats including our unique 3D Flash and Java based web formats.
N E W in 2.1.0.2
*******************
* Flash 3D export - this release includes a new streamed 3D web format based on the popular Adobe Flash Player 9.
Software rendering using Flash's powerful AS3 scripting functions allows 3D models to be rendered interactively.
The viewer file is small and compact and the models are highly compressed and streamed. See Flash 3D Export for
details.
* X3D, STL export - Two handy new export formats.
* Support for hardware imaging rigs - fixed camera systems or computer controlled turntables are now supported.
The rig is precalibrated by taking a set of photos with the 3DSOM calibration mat. The mat can then be removed
and a further scans taken with the object to model. This allows more flexibility and easier masking as the mat
need not be present in object shots.
* Accurate scaled units - you can now enter the size of the mat by measuring the special "mat unit" marker. This
allows 3DSOM Pro to export 3D models with accurate scale (in mm) or import models with millimetre units.
* STL dense geometry import - STL models can now be imported (untextured) for texturing from photographs.
* Improved support for large meshes - Meshes with up to 500K triangles can now be imported and efficiently
decimated (with or without textures). Large meshes can also be more efficiently texture mapped from photographs.
* Improved 3DS import - 3DSOM Pro now supports non-closed 3DS meshes for importing. 3DS models can then be export
in 3DSOM Pro's unique web formats such as the Java and Flash formats.

1)Powerful masking tools
************************
-Automated masking capability unique
-----------------------------------
After adding images to the project, the next step in 3DSOM Pro is to mask the images. Masking the images refers
to the process of marking the background around the object, so that 3DSOM Pro knows where the object is within
the images
-Interactive threshold selection
--------------------------------
Sometimes auto-masking the images with the default settings results in an unsatisfactory mask. Determining a
single threshold for the whole image can require a lot of trial and error. Different thresholds may also be
required for different areas of the image.
-Shrink Wrap toolunique
-----------------------
3DSOM Pro provides a semi-automatic tool to make manual masking easier. Simply sketch a very rough outline around
the object and the mask can be "shrink-wrapped" onto the object for quick and accurate masking.
-Complete set of manual masking tools
-------------------------------------
Including fill tool, polygon tool, circular brush tool, square brush tool.
-Improved support for 3rd party mask editing
--------------------------------------------
Premasked images with an alpha channel can be loaded into 3DSOM Pro in TIFF format. This is only recommended for
image editors such as PhotoShop where camera setting metadata found in the raw image files is preserved when
saving the masked versions.
Alternatively, the mask data can be exported from 3DSOM Pro along with the image data as a 4 channel RGBA image
for editing in 3rd party applications. Edited masks can then be imported back into 3DSOM Pro for use in 3D model
generation.
2)Surface Generation
********************
-Fast precise wireframe generation
----------------------------------
retains the 3DSOM patented silhouette intersection engine, with no voxel grid aliasing.
-Surface Optimisationunique
---------------------------
Intelligently smooths away artefacts in the silhouette-based geometry without compromising accuracy. Allows much
more accurate relighting for added realism.
-Subdivision Surface fitting
----------------------------
automated fitting of a smooth subdivision surface for unbelievable geometry compression and additional
improvements to the surface appearance.
-Model a part of a complex object
---------------------------------
using a set of photographs of a complicated object (e.g. a camera), 3D SOM Pro now allows a single textured part
(e.g. the camera body) to be modelled separately. This can result in substantially improved model quality.
-Improved integration with existing 3D modelling packagesunique
---------------------------------------------------------------
# Edit or create the surface geometry in a standard 3D modelling package. Then import back to 3DSOM Pro for
texturing. (See Editing the geometry in an external application and Texturing a CAD model).
# Interactive mesh decimation to reduce polygon count to required level.
# Optional clip plane to remove any remaining stand geometry.
3)Photo taking
**************
-Lens correction
----------------
Many zoom and wide-angle lenses distort the image so that straight lines appear curved. This can reduce the
accuracy of photo based modellers. 3DSOM Pro now includes a special module for correcting lens distortion. Many
cameras (with built-in lenses) are automatically handled with no user input. Now you can build high quality 3D
content with a standard low-cost digital camera.
-Semi-automatically merge in additional shots
---------------------------------------------
*using 3DSOM Pro's patented interface
Because the object is placed on a stand and pictures taken showing the calibration mat, the underneath of the
object is not visible in any of the images. When you build the textured model, the underneath of the model is
textured with a plain colour guessed from the surrounding geometry.
-Merge multiple scans
---------------------
-# using the alignment wizard to accurately model the underside of the object (see Merging multiple scans section in the online User Guide).
# Mat printing function to create calibration mats on an ordinary printer at any size.
# Accepts up to 256 input images per project as JPEG, BMP or PNG.
# Fully automatic, robust camera calibration to identify camera position and orientation.
4)State-of-the-art Texturing Tools
**********************************
-Fully automatic texture map creation
-------------------------------------
automatic UV unwrap. 3DSOM Pro texture maps are now designed for optimal compression.
-Incremental texture map generation
-----------------------------------
allows you to watch the process and stop as soon as the desired quality is obtained.
-Layered editing
----------------
DSOM Pro can now align the copied view with an input image for additional fine control
-View-dependent texturing
-------------------------
# To capture interesting lighting effects you can utilise all the input images. Because there is still an underlying 3D model, users can still view the
object from any angle and have the model quickly streamed over the web.
# User chosen texture map resolution up to 2048 pixels square.
# Tone correction option to compensate for exposure differences between images.
5)Save and Export
*****************
* Output to industry standard formats (including VRML, 3DS, Macromedia Shockwave3D) for importing into 3D packages such as 3D Studio Max or publishing
straight to the web (see Exporting the finished model section in the online User Guide).
* newHigh spec. 3D viewer appletunique selling point Compact redistributable Java 3D viewer renders backgrounds, shadows, relighting, smooth shading, and antialiasing.
