Mathematica is a specialized computer program used mainly in scientific and mathematical fields. It was originally conceived by Stephen Wolfram and developed by a team of mathematicians and programmers that he assembled and led. It is sold by Wolfram Research of Champaign, Illinois.
It provides cross-platform support for tasks such as symbolic or numerical calculations, arbitrary precision arithmetic, data processing, and plotting. Mathematica has a programming language which supports functional and procedural programming styles.
With Mathematica 6, a free interactive player is provided for running Mathematica programs that have been digitally signed for non-commercial use via a Wolfram Research web service, or published on the Wolfram Demonstrations Project website. It can also view unsigned Mathematica files, but not run them.

Mathematica è un ambiente di calcolo simbolico e numerico multipiattaforma, ideato da Stephen Wolfram e successivamente sviluppato da un team di matematici e programmatori. Mathematica è anche un potente linguaggio di programmazione interpretato.
Il sistema consente l'animazione di figure generate in sequenza, con buone possibilità di visualizzazione di concetti matematici di natura dinamica. I notebooks possono essere registrati come file ASCII, e come tali trasferiti tra piattaforme diverse per posta elettronica; essi possono essere convertiti in formato HTML per essere posti in rete, così come possono essere convertiti in LaTeX per essere pubblicati.
E' prevista la possibilità di interfacciare Mathematica con altri programmi scritti in linguaggi diversi (C, Fortran, ...) mediante un protocollo di collegamento denominato
MathLink.
Il linguaggio di programmazione di cui dispone Mathematica può essere utilizzato secondo modalità diverse, sia procedurali che dichiarative, e consente sofisticate regole di sostituzione basate sul pattern matching (regole di sostituzione basate su modelli).
