Abby is married to bar owner Marty. She is also having an affair with barman Ray. Marty hires a private detective (Visser) to spy on them and then kill them, however Visser has his own plans to get Marty's money. However with Marty and Visser double crossing each other and Ray and Abby unable to trust each other things quickly spin out of control.
This is the Cohen's first major film as director/producer and it is a sort of twisted homage to the thrillers of the 40/50's where betrayal comes from lovers and murder. The story is preety straightforward with the usual twist etc that come with this sort of thing. However it is very enjoyable and darkly delivered.
The Cohen brothers work well here to create a dark tension with lots of lingering images and sounds. The sound editing is excellent – whether it being the dull beat of fans or a mix of noise to heighten the sense of fear. They also work well with the cameras – some shots show their work with Sam Rami has influenced them (a frantic zooming shot) but also they rest on things like decaying fish or the ominously burning incinerator. They have gotten better with time but this was a very asssured start.
The cats are great - McDormand and Getz have less to do than I expected and don't really convince as a pair of lovers, but Getz is good in his solo panic stuff. Hedaya is typically sweaty and fits his role well but Emmet Walsh is excellent as the treacherous Visser – his performance is not so much one of evil as one of grease!
Overall the Cohen brothers rarely make a poor film – it's good to see that they have had this standard from the very start.
