This collection of 9 arias is one of Handel's most celebrated works, famous even from his time. He was already an English citizen with lots of operas performed to high acclaim in London where he composed these pieces during 1724 to 1727 on the poetry of his compatriot Barthold Heinrich Brockes whose Passion text had already set along with some other famous composers like Mattheson and Telemann.
I have this in some fine performances (including the Arleen Auger set) but this particular one which inserts some fine sonatas in between the arias is indeed one of the most pleasant to listen to.
