Description:

Doctor Who BF011 The Apocalypse Element [REMIXED]

A Four Part Big Finish Audio Drama

Starring Colin Baker as the Doctor,
Maggie Stables as Evelyn Smythe
and Lalla Ward as Romana II

Written by Stephen Cole
Directed by Nicholas Briggs
Music by Nicholas Briggs
Remixed by Dr Matt

Twenty years ago, an expedition made up of representatives from a number of worlds disappeared on the planetoid Etra Prime, including the newly inaugurated President of Gallifrey, one Lady Romana. Some time later, many of their dead bodies materialised on the planet Archetryx.

Today, Archetryx hosts a delagation from the many planets who have time travel capabilities, including the Monan Host and representatives from Gallifrey. However, as the Doctor finds himself drawn to Archetryx, it becomes evident Etra Prime is being used as a weapon to destroy Archetryx. But why? What is the secret of the Gravity Wells and what is the significance of the crystals adorning the mutants that exist down there?

And just why does the incumbant President of the High Council of the Time Lords allow a Dalek Task Force to land on Gallifrey?

REMIX NOTES:

Originally released with the Delia Derbyshire version of the theme music, this has been remixed with the appropriate Dominic Glynn Version.

This was a very tricky one to do, mainly because the recaps had either different or no music compared to the corresponding cliff-hanger.

The end of Part 1 had quite dramatic music, whereas the recap had none (apart from a bass drum at the end). To recreate the cliff-hanger, I mixed to Part 2 (and the bass drum) and then recreated the last few notes of strings from Part 1 which I mixed over the sting, along with a Kaled mutant squeal.

Because of the (lack of music) discrepancy between the end of Part 1 and the recap, I decided to use the end of Part 1 (with music) to recreate the recap (extended by 14 seconds for mixing necessity) adding the few of notes music I had used at the end of Part 1 to bridge the mix to Part 2.

There was a very bad fade and cut to new scene in Part 2 which I have remixed (occurring at 19'26".

The cliff-hanger to Part 2 was even more troublesome than Part 1. Part 2 ended on a very bassy cymbal crash - replaced by a hollow electronic twang on Part 2. I tried mixing the end theme in over this twang, but it sounded wrong, and didn't have the same dramatic emphasis as the original cliff-hanger. So after searching for matching music in sound effects libraries and synth banks - all to no avail, I very randomly (and in frustration) just mixed in a bit of similar music (occurring at 35'11" over the last line and it kind of worked. But the music changing key didn't, so with a clever bit of pitch-shifting and mixing, I made it one constant note long enough to bring the end theme in over (admittedly, it is not the cymbal boom of the original, but an orchestral boom - but I feel it works equally as well). But the Dalek voice was slightly drowned out, and didn't run to the sting, so I overlaid the mid and high ranges of a previous 'EXTERMINATE!' - and gun blast - to complete the mix.

The beginning of Part 3 was easy - due to slightly shortening the recap (mixing it as per the original sounded messy - not enough gap to mix in from, so Part 3 starts with the Gallifreyan alarm).

The cliff-hanger to Part 3 was the same as Part 1 - music on the cliff-hanger, none on the recap.  So I faded out on the Doctor's last word, added some reverb, and mixed an appropriate chord of music to bridge the gap to the theme music. On the original a chord happened as the sting struck, not on the Doctor's last line, but this was impossible to recreate.

Using the (with music) end of Part 3 to recreate the beginning of Part 4 proved tricky - there was no good place to mix to no background music (I tried many times). Instead I decided to shorten the recap by a few seconds.
