Description:

In his day, composer Augustín Barrios Mangoré was known as the "Chopin of the guitar". Find out why listening to the splendid collection that assembles 19 of his best compositions played by the talented Peruvian guitarist Alexander-Sergei Ramírez.

AGUSTÃN BARRIOS MANGORÉ (1885-1944)

La catedral (1921-1939) in B minor
I.Lento (Preludio saudade) - II.Andante religioso - III.Allegro solemne
A visit to the Cathedral of San José in Montevideo inspired Barrios in 1921 to compose one of his most famous works. The organ music of Johann Sebastian Bach, which he heard on that occasion, impressed him deeply and moved him to compose the second and third movements. 18 years later in Cuba he added the "nostalgic Preludio".

Estilo uruguayo in D minor
"Estilo uruguayo" is also known in many South American countries as "Canción triste" (sad song). It has an improvisatory character, with slow portions of recitative alternating with quicker, dance-like sections.

Aire de zamba (1923) in D minor
Compared with the samba, its Brazilian namesake, the zamba, an Argentinian dance-song, is much slower and melancholy in character.

Vals, op.8 no.3 (c.1919) in D minor
When the Europeans imported the waltz to South America at the end of the 19th century, it became one of the most popular dances there and was also reflected in Barrios' work.

Danza paraguaya no.1 (c.1924) in D major
The "Paraguayan dance", in galopa rhythm, is characterized by its fast tempo.

Sargento cabral (zamba) in D minor
This zamba is a tribute to "Sergeant" Cabral, who was awarded his military rank posthumously by the people after having saved the life of José de San Martín (1778-1850), the "liberator of Latin America". Cabral threw himself in front of the general, for whom an enemy bullet was intended, and thus died a hero's death.

Confesión (romanza) (before 1925) Confissão de amor in G major
This romanza is one of Barrios' loveliest works. The composer has the guitar in this piece imitate the sound of a cello.

Preludio, op.5 no.1 (1921) in G minor
Baroque figures and rhythm utilizing the entire range of the guitar evoke the preludes of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Choro da saudade (before 1929) in G minor
This "Choro of Longing" pays homage to the music of Brazil with its typical syncopated rhythms and chromatically tinted melodies.

Leyenda de españa in E minor
This "Legend" is an improvisation in the Spanish style. The middle section suggests the "copla" of the piano piece Asturias by Isaac Albéniz.

Las abejas (1921) in D minor
Hidden behind the illustrative title "The Bees" is a study in arpeggios and slurs of great technical and interpretative difficulty.

Oración por todos (c.1925) in A minor
In this "Prayer for All People" Barrios manifests his profound religious belief.

El sueno de la muñequita (early 1920s) in A minor
The "Dream of the Little Doll" is a lullaby that Barrios wrote for his host's daughter during a pleasant evening at the home of friends.

Vals de primavera (1921) in A major
Barrios himself considered this "Waltz of Springtime" to be one of his best works.

La samaritana in D minor
The image of an altruistic Samaritan woman is especially evident in the middle section of this little-known work by Barrios.

Mazurca apasionada (1919) in A minor
Barrios dedicated this mazurka to the Rio de Janeiro opera singer Maria Ester, with whom he was in love.

Cueca (danza chilena) (c.1925) in C major
The cueca is a Chilean folk-dance with an effective drum passage in the middle section.

Villancico de navidad (1943) in D major
In this folk Christmas carol, Barrios has the guitar imitate the chiming of bells.

Una limosna por el amor de dios (1944) el último trémolo in E minor
Written a few months before his death, this plea for "Alms for the Love of God" is Barrios' last composition. The use of plucking and tremolo technique evokes the playing of a mandolin.

ALEXANDER-SERGEI RAMÃREZ, guitar
(The notes to the works are by the performer)
(Not all of the works can be dated)
